During pipe transport operations at a Middle Eastern stockyard, a flat‑bed trailer loaded with three 8‑ton pipes (total 24 tons) experienced a fuel tank rupture while departing the site.
The trailer’s chassis contacted an undulation on the mountainous dirt road, causing the tank to breach and release diesel onto the surface.
The trailer was immediately relocated outside the premises, and the leaked fuel was contained using available spill‑response materials. No personnel injuries occurred.
Preliminary Findings – Diesel Tank Rupture Incident
The trailer’s diesel storage tank, positioned beneath the chassis as part of the flat‑bed design, came into contact with an undulation along the travel route, resulting in a rupture.
Although several other trailers (at least four units) regularly use the same route without incident, it is presumed that the driver’s handling of the loaded trailer (24 tons) may have contributed to the tank’s contact with the uneven terrain.
As this trailer was the last to depart the site, a degree of driver haste is also considered a contributing factor.
The designated travel route for heavy equipment should be routinely inspected for undulations or protruding rocks that could damage oil hoses or fuel tanks. Any irregularities identified must be graded or tapered smoothly before use.
Drivers and trailer operators should receive regular awareness training on oil‑spill prevention and response measures.
Maintenance records for all equipment mobilized to site must be reviewed to verify the integrity of trailer body components, particularly fuel tanks and undercarriage fittings.
